High School No. 3

Historically shaped

The school building in 1912. It was endowed with high standard equipment and facilities. The school's German name was Kronprinz-Wilhelm-Real-Gymnasium and it was intended for boys only.

No other school has been engineered quite like ours. Lavishly built in 1912 by the Germans, luckily, though not generously, spared by the Soviets in 1945, thoroughly cleaned up from the war ashes with hands of the Poles, it is a microcosm which mirrors dramatic events in recent history of our city and country too conspicuously.

In 1945 the center of Gdańsk was ruined in 90%. Because the school was used as hospital by Russian soldiers, who kept their horses in the gym, the builiding survived without any major damage.

Polish education which started in ruins as soon as the II World War ended, though in appallingly difficult conditions, initiated the process of the school’s  dynamic development. It grew in number and was strengthened by the drive of its teachers and students to be successfully progressive force in learning as well as social and political life. Many members of Topolówka community had its share in propelling the wind of change which brought Solidarity movement and the political transitions to Poland  after the year 1980. The school’s genius loci, which has been shaped by past generations, is protectively inspiring our students today.

Our school teaches tolerance. Not only politicians of various options, but also economists, writers or academic professors accept invitations for debates. Here Lech Wałęsa on his latest visit to Topolówka.
